Surrey 2nd Team left to right: Julia Brook (Walton Heath), Susan Glover (Hankley Common), Jackie Kingswell (Tyrrells Wood), Gabby Shacklady (Limpsfield Chart), Heidi Man (Walton Heath), Kim Munro (Epsom)
The third match in the 2022 Stovold Trophy campaign was played against Sussex at Ifield Golf Club, a mature parkland course to the west of Crawley. The teams gathered on a beautifully bright morning with a pleasant breeze which kept the temperature considerably cooler than during the recent heatwave and perfect for golf.
The morning foursomes started well for Surrey. The top pairing of Kim Munro and Julia Brook registered an early win, quickly followed by another point from Gabby Shacklady and Heidi Man. Jackie Kingswell and Susan Glover had a tough battle against the gritty Sussex pairing of Tracy Poulsom and Rosie Hockey, eventually losing on the 18th. For the first time this year, Surrey went into the lunch break ahead, 2 points to 1.
By the time the afternoon singles matches went out onto the course, the sun had come out in all its glory and the breeze had strengthened. Jackie Kingswell played exceptionally well and scored an early point with a strong win against Rosie Hockey. Two further good performances from Julia Brook and Kim Munro added to Surrey’s points tally. Gabby Shacklady played a closely fought match against Leanne Caffyn, finally taking victory 2 up on the 18th. This left Heidi Man and Susan Glover battling valiantly in the final two matches on the course. In each case, holes were traded regularly between the players and the two matches went to the 18th hole. Sussex won both points.
The end result was an excellent 6 - 3 victory for Surrey. The teams enjoyed the course and hospitality at Ifield. Once again, all the matches were played in great spirit.
