Surrey 2nd Team win tough Stovold Trophy match against Hampshire

Left to right: Kim Munro (Epsom), Rachel Higgins (West Byfleet), Annabel Peaford (Walton Heath), Jane Bathurst (non-playing Captain), Heidi Man (Walton Heath), Emily Peaford (Walton Heath), Yale Lee (Coombe Wood).

A relatively young Surrey 2nd team gathered at West Surrey Golf Club to play Hampshire in the second Stovold Trophy match of 2022.  It was a warm and bright day, with intermittent cloudy spells and an increasing breeze in the afternoon.  The West Surrey course looked very inviting, with greener fairways than many other courses following the recent heatwave and slick greens.

In the morning foursomes, the top two matches were closely fought with the pairings trading holes and never being more than one up.  In the top match, an excellent approach shot to the 18th green by Georgina Carter allowed Hampshire to clinch victory while in the second, Hampshire held on to a slim lead and won by one hole.  Annabel Peaford and Rachel Higgins in the final match gave Surrey a welcome win which meant that Hampshire took a 2-1 lead into lunch.

The afternoon singles matches were always going to be closely fought.  Strong wins from Kim Munro, Emily Peaford and Rachel Higgins shifted momentum to Surrey.  However, Hampshire were far from finished and Aileen Simpson secured a good win in the second match.  This left two matches on the course.  Annabel Peaford and Heidi Man were playing experienced opposition in Becky Scott and Diane Oram, respectively, and both of the Surrey girls found themselves down at the turn.  Some excellent long and accurate hitting off the tee helped Annabel get back from 3 down to all square.  By the 17th she was one up and another magnificent tee shot allowed her to take victory 2&1.  Heidi played some lovely golf and fought her way back to all square but a shot out of bounds on the 16th cost her the hole.  She played the 17th and 18th very well but lost the match by 1 hole.

The teams enjoyed the course at West Surrey and the warm welcome they received from both the staff and members of the club.  The match was played in excellent spirit.  The final result was an excellent 5-4 win for Surrey.
