Surrey Golf Partnership
In 2004, Sport England (who distribute Lottery money to English Sport) designated golf as one of the top 10 sports in the country and asked the English Golf Union (EGU), English Womens’ Golf Association (EWGA) and Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to produce a 'Whole Sport Plan for Golf' which covered all elements of the game - amateur, professional, men, ladies and juniors. This plan was produced and submitted for funding in February 2005. As a result, Sport England awarded golf £9million for the period 2005 - 2009. This is administered by The England Golf Partnership whose members are the EGU, EWGA and PGA with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England.
The plan itself consists of three main sections - 'Start', 'Stay' and 'Succeed'. The first two of these sections covers getting people into the game and then retaining them. 'Succeed', as its title implies, deals with the elite end of the game at county and national levels.
In order to implement the 'Whole Sport Plan' at county level, three 'pilots' were initiated, and Surrey was one of those chosen. Partnerships have been formed within those three county unions and development plans were produced and submitted to EGU/EWGA for funding. The Surrey Golf Partnership was formed in May 2007 and works closely with EGU/EWGA through Regional Development Officer, Andrew Willems. The Surrey Golf Partnership is concerned, mainly with the 'Start' and 'Stay' elements of the 'Whole Sport Plan'.
The Surrey Golf Partnership (SGP) comprises of the Surrey County Golf Union, the Surrey County Ladies Golf Association, the Surrey Professional Golfers Association and is supported by the Golf Foundation, Sport England and the English Golf Partnership. The SGP's core objectives are:
- To promote and increase awareness of the game of golf in Surrey
- To introduce more people to golf regardless of age, gender and background
- To help people to sustain their involvement and regular participation in golf
- To educate players on the rules and etiquette of the game
- To make it easier to join a golf club by improving accessibility and affordability
- To undertake the training and support of volunteers and coaches
- To establish an information and knowledge base of standards and best practice
- To support the development of golfing talent by working with the appropriate bodies
