Another cold day although when the sun shone it did feel as if spring is on its way.
The finalists in the Derry Cup were Walton Heath (who last won in 2015) and West Hill. The first pair were Julia Brook (Walton Heath) v. Ellen Yates (West Hill) followed by Marion Bridgen v. Kay Bowman and then Alison Gee v. Jan Gilkes. These were all experienced players so it was always going to be a good match. Alison Gee won her match first and when Marion Bridgen finished her match on the 15th green the first match was called in although at that time Ellen Yates was 2up on Julia Brook. Congratulations to Walton Heath on their victory.
The finalists in the Helme Shield were Royal Mid-Surrey and Burhill. The first pair were Amanda Chan (Royal Mid-Surrey) v. Debbie Richards (Burhill), Philippa Stedman (Royal Mid-Surrey) v. Nuala Maskell (Burhill) and Elisabetta Bayliss (Royal Mid-Surrey) v. Janice Barnett (Burhill). These were all very close matches. Debbie Richards proved to be too experienced for Amanda Chan who struggled with the greens, and Debbie won on the 19th. Philippa Stedman then won her match for Royal Mid-Surrey so it all hung on the last match. Elisabetta and Janice were all square going down the 18th and Janice holed a good putt to clinch victory for Burhill. Congratulations to Burhill.
The Autumn Match Play finalists were Shelagh Kirkland (Walton Heath) and Karen Berry (Hindhead). Shelagh had won the Monk Plate the day before so was in practice. She proved to be too strong for Karen, despite some very good putting from Karen.
Our thanks to Linda (Lady Captain) and Sue (Vice Captain) for meeting and greeting all the competitors and making sure that everything ran smoothly.
