Sunday, 21st October was the last Finals day of the SLCGA calendar and Woking hosted both the Hicks Plate and Hicks Trophy finals. It was the most perfect autumn day and Banstead Downs v Tandridge were the first teams out playing the Hicks Plate final. Tandridge took the first two matches with Anna Basden-Smith and Juliette Dunlop winning on the 14th green. Banstead Downs fought back with Mandy Hiscocks also winning on the 14th and Sam White taking her opponent to the 17th. Everything rested on the last match, but Sally Everest from Tandridge secured the winning match by 4/3 giving Tandridge the Hicks Plate for 2018.
The Hicks Trophy was played between Royal Mid-Surrey and Worplesdon and a most impressive group of golfers was on display. Royal Mid-Surrey fielded five Surrey County Team players ranging in handicap from Scratch to 2. Worplesdon were nearly as strong with another Team of County players! Some amazing golf was played in the best of spirits – many of them being team mates from County week, but Royal Mid-Surrey managed to win four of the five matches so the last match still battling away were called in. Sophie Warner as the Captain of Royal Mid-Surrey’s team commented that they had not won the Trophy since 1991 which was before the majority of her team were even born!
The match results in the Hicks Trophy were: ( Royal Mid-Surrey players on the left)
Rafiah Banday won 5/3 v Katie Shepherd
Alice Spani Molella won 5/4 v Sarah Wilmore
Jocelyn Alford won 3/1 v Dolores Brown
Pavani Kumar and Niamh O'Connor were called in
Ellie Lace won 5/4 v Susie Dawes
Congratulations to all the teams!
( and a bit of excitement on Woking's terrace - "How did my ball land there?" )
