New Knockout Champions for 2018

On Saturday 13 October Hankley Common hosted the first of our individual Knockout finals.

The first final was the Gold Medal. This was between Belinda Pope from Hindhead and Cathy Dawson from West Byfleet. Belinda managed to get a good lead in the front 9, and despite Cathy fighting back in the second half Belinda eventually won on the 15th green, 4 and 3.

The second match was the Spring Match Play final, between 2 ladies from Windlesham, Eva Lau and Gill Wood. This was a very tight match, but Eva eventually emerged as the Champion.

Windlesham featured strongly in today's finals, with the Birley Trophy ( the Junior handicap trophy) being played between their junior members Ellen Yates and Sophie Mardani.  Having to give the younger Sophie 17 shots was just a bit too much for Ellen, and Sophie won the match 2 and 1.

The first final of the inaugural 4BBB was contested between Tandridge and Roehampton. Dawn Elliott ( who had ably managed the competition from the start) and her partner Sally Everest were somewhat thrashed by the Roehampton pair of Henrietta O'Shea and Caroline Dewar.

On Sunday 14 October Purley Downs hosted the second of our team and individual Knockout finals.

It was hard to believe that the weather could be so different from one day to the next.  Saturday was a lovely sunny day.  By contrast Sunday was wet, quite windy, cold and generally miserable!  We were very fortunate that Purley Downs is on chalk so despite the rain there was never an issue with casual water.

The first match was the Inter-Club Scratch Foursomes between defending champions Royal Mid-Surrey and Burhill.  Jocelyn Alford and Alice Spani-Molella got off to a strong start and proved to be too strong for Scynthia Larsen and Olivia Hunt.  They were only 3 over par when they won 3&1 which was very good scoring considering the conditions.

The second match was the Inter-Club Handicap Foursomes between Camberley Heath and Addington Palace.  This was a very well supported match and they saw a good battle but Camberley Heath managed to seal victory on the 17th.

The Centenary Foursomes was played between Patricia Morgan and Henrietta O'Shea from Roehampton and the junior pairing of Grace Bishop and Molly Miles from Wentworth.  The juniors were giving 13 shots and once they went ahead they managed to hold on to win a tight match 2&1.

The Burditt Salver was played between Hazel Nicol from Walton Heath and Rosemary Wales from Camberley Heath.  Hazel Nicol proved too strong on the day and claimed victory.

The Rigg Quaich (Junior trophy) was played between two of our strong juniors Lottie Woad from Farnham and Olivia Horsford of Wimbledon Park.  Olivia was in the lead early on but Lottie made a good comeback and in the end won 4&3.

Congratulations to all the players who had made it through to the finals and managed to survive the horrible conditions at Purley Downs.  Thank you also to Purley Downs who provided delicious sandwiches and cakes and hot drinks to revive competitors and spectators alike!

Well done to all our new Champions!
