Lizzie Prior ( Burhill GC) made it to the final of the English Womens' matchplay at Royal Mid-Surrey last week.
Having qualified through the 36 holes on Thursday Lizzie played some fantastic golf to reach the final. On Friday morning Lizzie beat Bethan Morris of Wales in a spectacular finale to their round. Both birdied 15, Lizzie birdied 16, Bethan eagled 17 and Lizzie birdied 18 to win 1up.
In the quarter finals she met Alice Plumb (Sherborne, Dorset) and the duel developed into an endurance test when they finished 18 holes all square. Hole after hole was halved in par before Lizzie won on the 23rd!
The final against Cara Gainer was very tight over the front nine and it was all square at the turn. Cara then won four holes in a row, helped by birdies on the 12th and 13th, where she rolled in 15-footers. Lizzie produced her own birdie on 15 to claw one back but when the par three 16th was halved in par the title belonged to Cara.
